Volunteer

Following are Ongoing Opportunities for Individuals – timing and frequency are flexible.  A minimum of once per week is preferred.

  • Become a Life Long Learning Volunteer – help adults with basic math and reading, offer a workshop in your area of interest or expertise, assist adult learners studying for their GED or high school diploma, or teach basic computer skills
  • Provide lunches weekdays to students in Life Long Learning
  • Drive adults to and from Life Long Learning classes
  • Pick-up and delivery – pick up food from the Food Bank, donations from local donors
  • Help in The xCHANGE (sorting and stocking donations, helping customers during “shopping” hours). The xCHANGE is a “store” where basic needs (house wares, toiletries, and clothing) are provided to program participants

Volunteering as a group is also appreciated.  Corporations, church groups, civic organizations and school groups have all reaped the rewards of volunteering at LifeWorks. From planting perennials to serving meals or helping our children with their homework, there are plenty of opportunities for your team to help.

LifeWorks’ xCHANGE Program

St. Luke’s LifeWorks xCHANGE functions as a “general store” for all participants in St. Luke’s LifeWorks' programs.  Stocked with goods donated from the community, program participants trade “Lukos” dollars they earn by achieving pre-set goals for items in the xCHANGE.  This concept of a token economy follows our philosophy of a “hand-up” not a “hand-out.”

Items at the xCHANGE include household items, kitchenware, small appliances, sheets and towels and a wide assortment of clothing.  Program staff can access any of these items if they need them for a person entering a program with immediate basic needs.  A steady flow of community donations keeps the volunteers who run the xCHANGE extremely busy as they sort, inventory and display merchandise---just like any retail outlet. Volunteers are needed to sort through donations Tuesdays thru Saturdays.

LifeWorks benefits from over 15,000 hours of voluntary services each year. We are grateful to all of the volunteers who join us in helping the people we serve in endless ways. LifeWorks depends on volunteers and donations to provide everything beyond the bare essentials for our participants and your efforts and talents are always welcome.

We have individuals who tutor, groups such as Women of Vision who do art projects with our children, organizations like Union Baptist Church who serve meals, and corporations like XL America (pictured right), who landscape and paint our living spaces.
